CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Prince Manfred of Brittany (In this AU: Manfred Hohenstauffen)
Character Canon: Heirs of Alexandria (novels)

History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heirs_of_Alexandria_series

Tragically bare bones. Manfred is from a historical AU of renaissance Europe where magic is common. He is second in line to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire, and as the emperor is elderly and the first in line is sickly, he will probably eventually become emperor himself. As such, Manfred was sent undercover, joining an order of holy knights where he could learn to command and fight and hopefully escape the notice of assassins from the Empire's enemies. Backed up only by his bodyguard and tutor, Erik, Manfred ended up neck deep in a complicated political and magical war between the Venetian Republic and Lithuania, who's ruler had had his mind consumed by the demon Chernobog that now wore his body like a puppet. His first major role in that fight involved personally fighting a captive god Chernobog had been using to commit magical murders to increase unrest.

He continued on commanding the knights in the name of the Empire, moving around Europe and Asia Minor to oppose various demons and worse, as well as to secure allies for his uncle, while maturing from a irresponsible boy to a future emperor.

AU History: The Hohenstauffen family is one of the most powerful and influential in Union, tracing their history all the way back to the Savior herself (or at least, they claim to. They have enough enlightened in their family that it's not too far fetched of a claim.). Manfred was born into privilege and spent most of his childhood playing without much in the way of stress in life, as his older brother was the one everyone assumed would take up the family's duties when his father died.

However, recently Manfred's brother was badly injured by a rampaging pokemon. He didn't die, but he's never expected to recover fully. The best doctors money can by suggest that unless he absolutely minimizes both physical and mental stress, the injuries could open back up and kill him. Even ideally, he probably won't live for more than a few more years.

Suddenly, Manfred's future had a lot more responsibility dumped on it. His father dragged him out of his life of debauchery, sobered him up, and sent him to join the Swords of the Savior where he could get a crash course in responsibility and martial skill, while hopefully keeping him out of the public eye.

Canon Personality: If left to his own devices, Manfred would probably do nothing more with his life than get drunk and then do stupid things while drunk that seemed fun at the time. Most of the things would probably involve pretty girls. His default state is lazy, womanizing glutton alcoholic. He lacks ambition.

He's not stupid, though. He has the capability for greatness, he just need to have it forced into the open. Manfred is at his best when he has someone to actually pressure him into doing the responsible thing. Such situations bring out the side of him that is clever, loyal, brave, and more than a little bit intimidating. He's never really had to apply himself in life, and it has left a mark on him, but he has the potential to be a brilliant leader. Unfortunately that day is quite a ways off in the future.

He's a smug little shit (in so much as anyone 6'6" and ~270 lbs could be called "little"). He's picked up a fair amount of understanding of politics and skulduggery just from having it around him while he was growing up, and to anyone around him who is confused by such things he will feel no guilt in talking down to them with a condescending attitude as Big Bro Manfred explains the facts of life, be they about assassinations, espionage, or even dealing with women (At least, a certain class of women.).

At the very deepest level, Manfred has a good soul. It's just buried under a lot of venial sin. He knows where the line is between trouble making and real serious immorality is, and while he might toe the line occasionally, he stays on the good side of it. And as he grows into his role, he'll learn to be occasionally responsible and wise. He'll never leave his fun loving roots behind entirely, though.

AU Deviation: The smaller scale of the setting of Union as opposed to all of Europe has left the power Manfred is poised to inherit significantly smaller in scale. The stakes are smaller. He's also never been the target of assassination. Thus, this Manfred is a bit less...trigger happy I guess the word would be. He won't be as quick to assume that someone is trying to kill someone else.

He also has a mild fear of boats and heights. It's nothing he can't handle if he needs to, but they make him nervous, largely because his powers are at their worst in such situations.

Canon Abilities: Unusual levels of physical strength, though not to superhuman levels, along with extensive martial and political training.

Enlightened Abilities: Ground/Fighting God of War. As long as his feet are on solid stone or earth, Manfred has improved strength and toughness, and basically unlimited stamina. Footware does not significantly interfere with this ability. Partial credit can be gained for things like the stone flooring so long as it's attached to the ground. No power would be gained from being in a boat or in the air, but he is quite strong even without this ability.

Starter Pokémon: As hilarious as a Slakoth would be, I think I actually am going with Machop.

Notes/Special Considerations: Hopefully there's no problem with making the Honenstauffens as a big name family of nobles. Manfred himself has been highly encouraged to not try trading on the family name right now, since he's supposed to be keeping a low profile. Specifically, right now Manfred's Dad is the one who's ACTUALLY on the council but his Grandfather, Charles Hohenstauffen, is the one who rules the whole family with an iron yet caring fist from the throne of retirement.

SAMPLES

-What do you feel your role in Union is?
I'm a second son. I was supposed to not make waves or do much. Maybe join the army or the priesthood and keep out of politics. Now...

Now, I've got way more falling on my shoulders than I want to. I'm still hoping my brother pulls some kind of miracle and lets me sink back into no one caring what I do again.

-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
Well that depends on- Wait, no, no it doesn't. Move mountains for your friends, and then work out the consequences later.

-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
Hookers? Brewers? No okay seriously...uh. Probably the people who grow the food. Can't do much on an empty stomach, after all.

-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
Not a lot. It might be based on some element of truth, I guess? Even if it is, now all it is is a tale we tell to children to teach them not to take advantage of their friends. Don't tell Grandpa I said that, though.

-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
Loyalty to those who depend on you. A solid moral compass...If you hadn't specified man, I would have added something about tits.

-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
[Recoiling in horror at the thought.] Depends on if I get a chance to explain myself. I'll be the first to admit I've got more than my share of flaws.

-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
Bang both their heads together until they stop fighting. Then sort it out when they get back to their senses. I don't have much patience for that kind of idiocy, and anyone will be less likely to keep causing trouble if they're trying to figure out if they've got a concussion.

-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
My personal charisma! That failing, my ability to bench press a snorlax.

-What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?
We annoyed them last time by trying to enslave them, right? Let's just...not do that. I don't know why everyone thinks this is so complicated. Don't try to conquer a race of all powerful pokemon that control time and space.

-No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
Superhuman strength is all well and good but let's be honest here, it's only going to get me so far in life. If I've GOT to succeed grandpa, then some kind of power that gives me a hint about what other people are thinking would be way more handy.
